Our Story

From modest beginnings in 1929 as a single department in Raffles College, with just ten students and three staff, the Faculty of Science has evolved into one of the largest Faculties in the National University of Singapore. There are now more than 4,500 undergraduate and 1,300 graduate students, 500 academic faculty, and 300 administrative, technical and support staff.


The Science education is multidisciplinary and trains students to meet the increasingly complex needs of the future. Our degree programmes are constantly revised to ensure that the education our students receive remains relevant and in demand. Course content is but a fraction of the education provided. Greater emphasis is placed on developing and sharpening the students' analytical and creative thinking skills, presentation skills, computer literacy, and problem-solving techniques. These are life skills that make the science graduates versatile, articulate, and IT-savvy.


A diverse range of courses and stringent examinations ensures that each science graduate is adaptable and capable under variable and challenging working and living environments. Students enjoy the flexibility of choosing from a wide variety of courses and cross-faculty modules that combine scientific study and resource management. On top of the rigorous training provided by the basic degree programmes, the Faculty also offers a host of special programmes, such as the Special Programme in Science, the Student Exchange Programme, the Science Academic Mentorship, and Professional Placement Programme, to spur our students to extend their intellectual and personal horizons.


The Faculty's constant efforts to excel in research include recruiting scientists of the highest calibres from all over the world, collaborating with top universities in the United States Europe and Asia-Pacific region, and investing in cutting-edge research facilities. Faculty staff are working closely with leaders in the industry, as well as, leading researchers in universities worldwide. A number of our staff from various departments has made breakthroughs in research and scientific methods that are making an impact in the global scientific community.
